U-707 Patrol 2 : 30/11/1940

30th November 1940
8:06pm 30th November 1940 - Watch officer confirmed visual sighting of a merchant travelling dark on an ENE course. After submerging we performed a standard 90 degree attack approach and confirmed that the merchant was flying a British flag and identified as a Granville-Type freighter. 2 Torpedo's (G7e) were fired on a 5 degree spread from a distance of 400 metres. Both hit, the freighter erupted into a ball of flames and sank beneath the waves in under 3 minutes. I paused for a minutes silence for the poor souls aboard, she went down so quickly that I was sure none of the crew made it to the lifeboats in time.
