9:44pm 15th December 1940 - Hydrophone contact detected while submerged hunting. A single merchant moving at medium speed at long range. After moving to within visual range, speed was determined to be 8 knots, and identified as a British Small Merchant. Interception was difficult with the boat only managing 13 knots at flank in such rough seas but we managed to move ahead and be in a good firing position by 1:05am. TDC was set up for the predicted position of the merchant and firing mark was set to 345 degrees.
A single G7e was fired, aimed just forward of the targets funnel. 42 seconds later the torpedo hit its mark at 1:18am. The merchant immediately slowed, we had killed the engine room. The crew abandoned ship at 1:28am and the merchant went under bow first, approximately 15 minutes after impact.
